FIELD NOTES / 08

A little more know-how.

Short, practical notes to help you prepare a better freight enquiry.

GUIDE 01

FCL or LCL?

FCL books the use of a full container; LCL consolidates cargo with other shipments. Compare volume, handling, transit needs, and total charges before choosing.

GUIDE 02

Before customs clearance

Prepare a consistent commercial invoice, packing list, cargo description, values, origin details, and any permits that may apply. Exact requirements depend on the goods and destination.

COMMON QUESTIONS / 09

Before cargo sets out.

General freight guidance. Confirm shipment-specific rules with your carrier, broker, or relevant authority.

What information do I need for a freight quote?

Share origin and destination, cargo description, package count, dimensions, gross weight, ready date, desired mode, and any handling or delivery requirements.

What is the difference between FCL and LCL?

FCL means booking a container for one shipper's cargo. LCL combines smaller consignments from different shippers in a shared container. Availability, handling, cost, and transit vary by lane.

How do I calculate cubic metres (CBM)?

Convert each package's length, width, and height to metres, multiply them, then multiply by the number of identical packages. Add package volumes together for the shipment total.

What is air volumetric weight?

It converts package volume into a weight equivalent. Airlines and forwarders compare volumetric and gross weight and may charge on the higher figure. The divisor depends on the service and route.

Which shipping documents are commonly requested?

Common documents include a commercial invoice, packing list, transport document, and customs declaration. Permits, certificates, or other records may be required for particular goods or countries.

What does an Incoterm determine?

An Incoterms® rule allocates specified delivery tasks, costs, and risks between seller and buyer. It does not by itself determine ownership, payment, or every contract term.

When does cargo risk transfer under CIF?

Under CIF, the seller pays freight and obtains the required insurance to the named destination port, but risk transfers when the goods are loaded on board at the port of shipment.

How do I track a container or bill of lading?

Identify the shipping line from your booking or transport document, then enter the reference on that carrier's official tracking portal. This site links to carrier tools but does not provide live tracking data.

Why can actual transit take longer than the estimate?

Port congestion, vessel schedules, transshipment, weather, customs processing, inspections, and inland delivery can affect total time. Indicative port-to-port ranges do not include every leg.

Can any cargo travel by air or sea?

No. Dangerous goods, temperature-sensitive products, oversized cargo, and restricted commodities have specific rules. Confirm classification, packaging, documentation, and carrier acceptance before booking.
